Wisdom Tooth Extractions
There is no known use for the last set of molars in the back of your mouth, also referred to as wisdom teeth. Many people routinely have these removed in their teens to avoid complications when they are older. Often, people say that if your wisdom teeth do not bother you, don’t have them removed. This is partially true. However, if you teeth are impacted, have cavities, contribute to gum disease, emerge at the wrong angle, or if you have a small mouth, Dr. Skousen and his team may recommend that you remove your wisdom teeth sooner rather than later.
Will I Be Given An Anesthetic During My Wisdom Tooth Surgery?
Certainly! Dr. Skousen is trained to perform conscious sleep dentistry which inserts sleep medication into your bloodstream. Although this will make you sleepy and relaxed, you will still be able to control your body and follow directions. Further, Dr. Skousen and his team will inject numbing medication in and around your teeth and gums.
What Should I Do After My Wisdom Tooth Removal?
If you chose conscious sleep dentistry during wisdom tooth removal, you will feel drowsy after the procedure. If you choose this option, bring a person with you to the appointment who can drive you home afterwards. Plan to take the rest of the day off from work or school. For the next three days you may experience some swelling. During these initial days, remember to eat soft food, stay hydrated, reduce swelling with an ice pack on the area, and gently brush your teeth on the second day after surgery. In the first few days you should also avoid using a straw, harshly rinsing your mouth, eating hard or crunchy foods, and smoking.
If you are between the ages of 17 and 25, Dr. Skousen may recommend a wisdom tooth removal to avoid future complications and pain. With Dr. Skousen and his expert team and through the use of sleep dentistry, your wisdom tooth extraction experience will be quick and comfortable.
