One or more missing teeth can impact the function and appearance of you smile. One of the best ways to restore the natural look and feel of your teeth is through dental implants. This surgical procedure is completed at the Heritage Dentistry office in Frisco, Texas and replaces your missing tooth and root with a prosthetic. Dental Implants can also be used to create a full mouth restoration as a more natural alternative to dentures.
When Are Dental Implants Used?
Dental implants are commonly used to replace missing, broken, or decayed teeth. For example, if you have a large cavity and the tooth’s root is compromised, it can be replaced with a prosthetic root and tooth. Likewise, instead of investing in a dental bridge, some patients opt for multiple dental implants. These teeth attached together on two or more posts can replace a section or a whole set of missing teeth. Some patients at Heritage Dentistry even opt for a full mouth restoration, where they use dental implants to replace all of their teeth.
How Are Dental Implants Placed?
Depending on the amount of viable bone in your jaw, your dental implant procedure could take anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months. Each implant post, that acts as the tooth’s root, needs a stable bone environment. If your bone is not strong enough, it can be replaced with a bone graft using bone from another part of your body, from an animal’s body, or a synthetic bone. Once the tooth has been removed, Dr. Skousen will place the prosthetic root into the hole. It may take a few weeks for your body to adjust to the new prosthetic. In the meantime, Dr. Skousen can give you a temporary tooth to wear on top of the post. Once your body has adjusted to the post, Dr. Skousen will place the permanent crown. After the procedure, you will be amazed at the types of foods you can eat with a dental implant. Not to mention, how beautiful your smile will look!
