Meet Dr. Skousen
Dr. Joel Skousen was born in Warren, Michigan, and grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is a Texas transplant via his wife, who went to Allen High School. Dr. Skousen received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management with a minor in Chemistry from Brigham Young University-Idaho. He then attended The Ohio State University College of Dentistry and received his D.D.S. degree. He loves dentistry and prides himself in building trust, and helping patients overcome dental fear and anxiety.
Dr. Skousen has a special compassion for patients that he gained through volunteer experiences before and during dental school. During his undergraduate studies, he went to Nicaragua to volunteer as a dental assistant. While there, he helped provide dental care for over 500 teens and young adults. This experience solidified his desire to become a dentist. During his junior and senior years in dental school, he completed his externships by working in underserved and special needs communities of Ohio. He especially learned from and enjoyed his experience working at the Nisonger Center Dental Program, a dental clinic for pediatric patients with special needs. He also participated in “Give Kids A Smile,” a free clinic for elementary aged children providing comprehensive dental treatment, and he volunteered at several free clinics throughout Columbus, Ohio, extracting teeth on the homeless and underserved populations. Now that he is a dentist he plans on continuing his volunteer work whenever possible, including a return trip to Nicaragua.
Dr. Skousen loves the pursuit of education and learning, and strives to learn as much as he can about dentistry through continuing education courses, and self-study. His goal is to provide excellent care and chair side manner. He is a member of the American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, Texas Academy of General Dentistry, and the Texas Dental Association.
Dr. Skousen enjoys spending most of his free time with his wife, and their twin toddler girls, who keep them very busy. He also has many hobbies and interests such as cooking, gardening, and making anything from scratch. his wife and in-laws jokingly refer to him as the male Martha Stewart. He also loves cars, sports, movies, weightlifting, and traveling. He always enjoys getting to know his patients and learning about their hobbies, he is always looking for new things to add to his list.
